This Week’s Cover: Johnny Depp helps chart a new course for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’

Jack Sparrow doesn’t usually feel regret, though he does at times feel lost. Fans of the devil-may-care seafarer may know what it’s like to be there with him. In this week’s cover story, EW looks at how the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean mega-franchise, On Stranger Tides (out May 20), attempts to reverse course from the previous two installments and return to the stand-alone spirit of the original. “I felt if we were going to do a 4, that more than anything we owed the audience a fresh start, without all the complicated mathematics of 1 colliding with 2 and 2 colliding with 3,” Depp says. “I felt like it was important to eliminate as many complications as possible.”
The Pirates series has earned $2.6 billion in worldwide box office alone (not counting home video, theme park and merchandising bonanzas), and Depp himself pocketed between $32 million and $35 million, according to estimates, for agreeing to a fourth. For the fans who have stuck with the franchise all this time, he says he wanted this one to be a better movie.
“They had to invent a trilogy out of nowhere,” he says of the previous films. “It was plot driven and complicated. I remember talking to [Gore Verbinski, director of the first three films] at certain points during production of 2 or 3, and saying: ‘I don’t really know what this means.’ He said, ‘Neither do I, but let’s just shoot it.’ This guy is this guy’s dad, and this guy was in love with this broad. It was like, ‘What?’”
As for Depp’s feelings about parts 2 and 3? “To be perfectly honest, I didn’t see them,” says the star. “I did see the first one. I have not seen the second one or the third one.”
To be fair, he tends not to watch himself onscreen anyway, but maybe Pirates 4 will get him to take a peek again?

“Rum Diaries, una promessa a Thompson”
Johnny ha detto che ha promesso a Hunter S.Thompson che avrebbe fatto un film sulla celebre sceneggiatura di The Rum Diaries.
Nel film, un adattamento del romanzo di Thompson, il protagonista, Depp, è l’alcolizzato Paul Kemp, uno scrittore che lavora come giornalista a Puerto Rico.
Parlando con Radio Times, Depp ha detto che ha trovato il manoscritto nella cantina di Thompson.
“Ricordo quando ho dissotterrato il manoscritto che era in una scatola nel suo scantinato. Non sapeva dov’era ed io l’ho tirato fuori e lui ha fatto tipo <Gesù Cristo!>” ha detto Depp.
E ha aggiunto “lo abbiamo letto insieme alle tre del mattino e facciamo <questo dovremmo farlo insieme>, ma Hunter non ha esattamente mantenuto la sua parte della promessa, credo avesse altre cose da fare”.
Depp ha lodato il regista Bruce Robinson come “genio” per il suo lavoro alla guida del film.
La star dei Pirati dei Caraibi: oltre i confini del mare ha anche rivelato che il cast e la troupe partecipavano ad un rituale quotidiano sul set per onorare la memoria di Thompson.
Depp ha spiegato “ogni giorno sul set avevamo questo rituale (per onorare la memoria di Thompson). Hunter avrebbe avuto la sua sedia personale proprio vicino a quella di Bruce e avrebbe avuto un copione con il suo nome sopra, tutto il completo, e avremmo messo un pacchetto di Dunhills su un tavolino vicino al suo posto, una bottiglia di Chivas, il suo drink favorito, ed un bicchiere pieno di ghiaccio.
Ed ogni singola mattina, avremmo immerso il nostro dito nel bicchiere e tamponato un po’ di Chivas sul nostro collo, come una specie di acqua di colonia di Hunter, bevuto un sorso e poi via a lavorare. Lo facevamo tutte le mattine, così Hunter era sempre lì. E’ stato bello.”

Johnny Depp ha detto che suo figlio preferisce Iron Man al Capitano Jack Sparrow.
Parlando a Radio Times, la star dei Pirati dei Caraibi spiega che suo figlio di 9 anni è un fan dell’eccentrico personaggio del pirata, ma è un fan ancora maggiore dell’eroe dei fumetti Marvel, interpretato da Robert Downey Jr.
“Oh, sì, è ancora appassionato del Capitano Jack. Ma allo stesso tempo lui mi vede tutti i giorni quindi è super abituato a papà” dice Depp riguardo suo figlio John “Jack” Christopher Depp III.
Ha aggiunto “E sai, Bob Downey, che è un vecchio amico, viene a casa per cena e Jack fa tipo “Oh mio dio!” quindi il capitano Jack diventa secondario rispetto ad Iron Man”.
Il nominato all’oscar, che recentemente ha detto di non sentirsi completamente cresciuto, ha rivelato che la famiglia è la cosa più importante della sua vita.
Depp, che farà un’apparizione cameo nell’adattamento cinematografico di 21 Jump Street, ha continuato “avere dei bambini, stare con Vanessa (Paradis), quella è la cosa più importante per me. E’ successo in un momento in cui ero pronto e mi ha dato così tanto. E’tutto, davvero.

Johnny Depp ha chiamato Keith Richards un “uomo affascinante”.
Depp e Richards hanno condiviso lo schermo nel film del 2007 I pirati dei Caraibi: fino ai confini del mondo.
In una intervista con Radio Times, Depp ha detto che fa tesoro del tempo che passa con il chitarrista dei Rolling Stones.
“E’ un uomo affascinante, cioè, ho letto la sua autobiografia Life. E’ un grande libro, ti dice le cose come stanno.” Ha detto Depp riguardo Richards.
Il nominato all’oscar ha continuato “Lo conosco da molto tempo. Passare un po’ di tempo sul set è semplicemente frequentarsi, sedersi e chiacchierare di musica, cinema, qualunque cosa, era un vero piacere.”
Depp, che apparirà nel film adattamento di 21 Junp Street, ha anche scherzato sul fatto che Richards berrebbe qualcosa che “sembra una scoria nucleare” da smaltire.
“Io sono un tipo da vino e mi piace un buon bicchiere di rosso. Quindi io mi prendevo il mio vino e Keith prendeva il suo solito. Non ho idea di cosa sia, perché sembra una scoria nucleare ed è un miscuglio che solo lui conosceva” ha aggiunto.
Richards e Depp appariranno insieme nel prossimo film dei Pirati, Oltre i confini del mare, che uscirà il 20 maggio 2011.

Next up, McDonell is cast as a young Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, a purportedly glib, self-aware take on the ’60s gothic soap about vampire Barnabas Collins and his family.

“They’ve started filming it already. I’m going to do a bit of work at the end of the shoot, so for me it’s at the end of the summer.” Nonetheless, it’ll be a busy couple of days. “Dude, it’s pretty good. Adesso arriva la notizia che Jerry Bruckheimer e la Disney hanno voluto l’attore come protagonista dell’adattamento di The Lone Ranger, primo capitolo di un nuovo potenziale franchise. La pellicola, diretta da Gore Verbinski, sarà anche interpretata da Johnny Depp e riporterà sul grande schermo le avventure di un personaggio iconico della cultura americana, le cui gesta sono state raccontate per quasi ottanta anni nei fumetti, alla radio, al cinema e in TV.
La scelta dei produttori è abbastanza spiazzante dal momento che, sin dall’inizio della fase di sviluppo, si era parlato di un’altra superstar da affiancare a Depp: tra i candidati c’era perfino George Clooney.
Le riprese di The Lone Ranger cominceranno entro la fine dell’anno, per un’uscita annunciata nell’autunno 2012.

JOHNNY DEPP FILMING HIS 21 JUMP STREET CAMEO TOMORROW (27th April)IN NEW ORLEANS

Be On The Lookout: Depp, who portrayed Officer Tom Hanson on the original 21 Jump Street TV series between 1987 – 1991 will be filming his secretive appearance for the upcoming film on Wednesday.

21 Jump Street is the big screen adaptation of the hit TV series that centers around two police officers (Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill) and their exploits as they are forced to work undercover in schools. Rapper Ice Cube will play the duo’s police chief and actress Brie Larson is the romatic lead. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) and produced by Neil Moritz. The movie’s supporting cast consists of Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco and Jake Johnson. It is scheduled for theatrical release March 16th, 2012.

There’s no word yet whether Depp will be reprising his role as Officer Hanson, a part that lasted for 80 episodes during the show’s original run, but our inside scooper managed to sneak a few details away from the movie’s set:

Depp will be arriving at Second Line Stages in New Orleans, Louisiana, tomorrow to film his cameo for the film. The slot for his role is only labeled as “D.B.” Jonah Hill & Channing Tatum will be off camera, while Peter Deluise will join Depp in what appears to be one of the first scenes for the film. Second Line Stages is located at 800 Richard St. New Orleans, LA, and was recently occupied by Warner Bros’ upcoming superhero movie Green Lantern

Captain Jack Sparrow will drop anchor in Moscow next month to launch “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the first time the franchise will hold a premiere there, Variety’s Marc Graser (@mgrrr) is first to report. Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, as well as producer Jerry Bruckheimer, are confirmed to attend  — making it Depp’s first promotional push in the city that’s become a rising star at the box office. The studio will still host the actual world premiere of “Pirates” at Disneyland on May 7.
